The short answer
Trim your beard when its length or outline stops matching the shape you want. A short, sharply defined beard may need attention sooner than a longer, softer style. If you are growing it, the schedule should protect progress rather than repeatedly return you to the same length.
Separate three tasks in your mind: maintaining overall length, tidying the perimeter and managing the mustache. They may not all need attention on the same day.
Watch the outline before choosing a calendar rule
Notice where the beard changes first. The sides may become wide, the chin may look uneven or the mustache may start covering more of the lip than you prefer. Those observations are more useful than copying someone else’s interval.
Take a photo after a trim you like and compare it with the beard a week or two later. You will see which details change quickly and which still look right. Use that pattern to discuss your next appointment.
Protect length while growing
If you want a longer beard, tell your barber at every visit. A shaping appointment may focus on stray hairs, side balance and the perimeter while leaving the chin length intact.
Do not treat every uneven hair as a reason to shorten the whole beard. Some areas need time to catch up. Ask what can be refined now and what should be allowed to grow before the next adjustment.
Treat the mustache as its own section
The mustache may need attention before the beard loses its shape. If you sweep it outward, cutting it directly to the lip line can remove the length needed for that style. If you prefer a clear lip, your maintenance goal is different.
At the chair
Explain the finish you want and ask which small adjustments you can make at home. Avoid applying a single beard length to the mustache simply because the same tool is already in your hand.
Know when home maintenance stops helping
If you keep correcting one side and then the other, stop. Repeated small cuts can change the overall outline without solving the original imbalance. A professional appointment is useful when the beard needs a complete assessment rather than another isolated touch-up.
The same applies if the neckline has drifted upward. More trimming cannot replace missing length. Preserve what remains and agree on a realistic grow-back plan.

Set the next appointment after seeing the result
Before leaving your beard service, ask what should signal that it is time to return. Your barber can discuss the specific shape rather than an arbitrary interval for every client.
Book City Barbers’ Wet Beard Trim in Salt Lake City and explain whether you are maintaining, shortening or growing your beard. That goal should guide both the current service and the timing of the next one.
