In brief
Hairspray can help hold a finished hairstyle, but it is usually most useful after the main shape has been created. Spraying more onto hair that is already lying in the wrong direction may set that problem more firmly rather than correct it.
Start by deciding whether you need light support for movement or a firmer finish for a specific style. The strongest option is not automatically the most practical one.
Shape the hair before setting it
Arrange the fringe, part and top with your normal drying and styling routine. Then assess which areas actually need additional hold. A small amount used with a purpose can be easier to manage than coating the entire head.
If the front keeps collapsing before spray is applied, the haircut’s length, product weight or drying direction may need attention first.
Read the hold and application instructions
Flexible and firm products are designed for different results. Use the recommended distance and quantity on the label. Spraying too close can concentrate product into a wet or stiff patch.
Keep spray away from the eyes and avoid inhaling it. Follow the package’s ventilation, heat and flammability instructions, particularly with aerosol products.
Choose the finish you want to touch
Some people enjoy a hairstyle that stays fixed. Others want to move their hands through it or change the front later. Consider that preference before choosing a firm-setting formula.
If the hair becomes brittle-feeling or visibly coated, the amount or product may not suit your goal. A lighter application may be enough, but it is also reasonable to choose a different finishing approach.
Avoid endless corrections after the finish is set
Repeatedly combing and respraying can make the result less predictable. Make the main adjustments first and allow the product to behave as directed.
If you need to change the shape substantially later, follow the product’s restyling or removal guidance rather than continuing to layer it over a finish you no longer want.

Use it for the occasions that need it
You may want extra support for a presentation, photographs or a longer evening without needing the same routine every day. A good haircut should still have a useful ordinary finish.
