The short answer

A buzz cut generally keeps the hair very short, often with a relatively uniform length or only a small difference between sections. A crew cut leaves more length on top, usually with a shorter back and sides and some shape toward the front.

Both can simplify your routine, but they do not look or grow out exactly the same. The decision comes down to how much hair you want to arrange, how much of your head shape you want exposed and whether you want styling options at the front.

What a buzz cut gives you

A buzz cut removes much of the daily work involved in directing a longer top. You can choose a closer finish or leave a little more length. The sides may be kept similar to the top or cut shorter for contrast.

Because the hair is short, the outline and your natural growth patterns are easy to see. Bring a reference showing the actual length you like rather than asking for a buzz cut without any other detail. If you are moving from much longer hair, a longer first pass gives you room to decide.

What a crew cut keeps

A crew cut preserves enough length on top to create more shape. Depending on your hair, the front may sit with a little lift or follow its natural direction. The sides can be softly tapered or more closely faded.

That extra top length offers flexibility, but it also means your crown and front growth patterns matter. A section cut too short may stand up, while one left too long may collapse. Your barber can adjust the balance instead of using the same length everywhere.

Compare the maintenance you actually want

A buzz cut can need very little styling while still requiring regular cutting if you want it to remain extremely short. A crew cut may take a little product or direction in the morning but offer a softer change as the top grows.

The sides make a difference in either case. Adding a skin fade creates a close finish that will show regrowth sooner than a longer taper. Choose the side treatment separately from the name of the haircut.

Think about the next stage

If you may grow your hair again soon, consider what length you are willing to give up now. A very short buzz cut leaves less flexibility for an immediate change. A crew cut keeps more material on top for a future crop or short side part.

Neither decision needs to be permanent, but discussing your next likely style can help you avoid an unnecessary reset. Your barber can explain what is possible with the length you currently have.

Make your request clear

For a crew cut, describe the amount of front length and the side finish you prefer. For a buzz cut, agree on the initial length and whether the top and sides should match. Bring a photo if you are not sure of the terminology.
